Giving - an act of worship

While we no longer have “an offering moment” in the service where we pass the plates, we want to periodically highlight the deep significance of giving.

Each financial gift of any amount…

  • …is an act of worship, an expression of gratitude and love to God

  • …is received with humble gratitude, and carefully stewarded

  • …is used to support the local and global ministry of FBC

  • …is a step of trust, believing that God will supply our needs

2 Corinthians 9.8 May God bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

The sacred value of human life

In our spiritual brokenness, we humans gravitate toward a warped devaluing of life.   This leads to exploiting our power and privilege for our own advancement or convenience. In contrast, the Holy Scriptures teach that each human bears the sacred image of God and is therefore of inestimable intrinsic value. Old or young, weak or strong, light or dark are precious in His sight, and should be in ours.

This third weekend in January highlights two significant cultural struggles related to the sacred value of human life. Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day reminds us of the long history of devaluing humans based on skin color or ethnic origin, while today’s National Sanctity of Life Sunday, reminds us of the countless unborn girls and boys whose lives hang in the balance over the abortion issue.

While admitting that aspects of so-called social issues are complicated, we wholeheartedly reaffirm the sacred value of every human life as bearing the image of God. This includes the elderly man with dementia, the recent immigrant regardless of papers or skin color, the tiny girl in her second trimester of development, and everyone else. May God help us better love, protect, listen to, and value His precious ones.
